Teratogenic medicines are drugs that can interfere with the development of an unborn baby during pregnancy. Exposure to these medications may increase the risk of birth defects, neurological disorders, developmental delays, physical disabilities, and lifelong health conditions.

While many medicines save lives and improve health, some treatments can also carry serious risks during pregnancy. Throughout history, certain medications have caused devastating consequences for families when the dangers were not fully understood, properly communicated, or safely monitored.

The goal is not to create fear around medicine, but to encourage awareness, compassion, accountability, and

better support for affected families. Understanding the risks of teratogenic medications is essential for improving healthcare, protecting future generations, and ensuring patients are fully informed when making medical decisions.

Traditional medicine carries unique challenges, particularly when a mother places complete trust in medical professionals who are expected to fully understand the treatments they prescribe. For many families affected by teratogenic medicines, that trust was given in good faith, with the belief that science and healthcare would provide protection and safety.

Yet the consequences of some medications revealed that medical knowledge is not always complete, and the long-term effects were not always fully understood. The fascination with traditional medical authority and established treatment systems remains deeply rooted in society, even when difficult questions remain unanswered.

This creates a painful conflict between trust, responsibility, and lived experience — especially for families who continue to face the lasting impact of medical decisions made decades earlier.
