How Sodium Valproate Works
Sodium valproate works by helping to stabilise electrical activity in the brain. Although its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, it is known to affect several biological pathways that influence how nerve cells communicate with one another.

One of its main actions is to increase the availability of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an important neurotransmitter that helps reduce excessive electrical activity in the brain. GABA acts as the brain's natural "calming" chemical, helping to prevent nerve cells from becoming overactive. By increasing GABA activity, sodium valproate can reduce the likelihood of seizures occurring.

In addition to its effects on GABA, sodium valproate also influences other chemical signalling pathways and ion channels involved in nerve cell activity. These combined actions help to stabilise brain function, which is why the medicine can be effective in treating several different neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Because sodium valproate acts on multiple pathways, it may be prescribed for a range of conditions. In epilepsy, it helps reduce or prevent seizures by limiting abnormal electrical activity in the brain. In bipolar disorder, it helps stabilise mood by influencing the brain circuits involved in emotional regulation. It may also be used to help prevent migraine by reducing the abnormal brain activity believed to contribute to migraine attacks.
